Polish Handball – European Championships in Poland
In recent years Poland has hosted two major sporting tournaments; the European football championships which they joint hosted with Ukraine, and most recently the men’s volleyball world championships in 2014, which was of course eventually won by the host nation after a gripping final in which they defeated Brazil. In January 2016 Poland will host their third major tournament in four years with the Men’s European Handball Championships taking place across five Polish cities – Katowice, Krakow, Lodz, Sopot, and Wroclaw. WIth Polish handball currently very strong, hopes are high that this could be Poland’s year.
The tournament promises to be an exciting affair, with Poland’s group consisting of France, Macedonia, and Serbia. Group games in this group will take place at the Tauron Arena in Krakow. Despite being ranked at number 11 in the world rankings, Poland will be hoping home advantage will play into their hands and give them a chance of winning the tournament; they did of course have a successful World Championships earlier this year when they finished an impressive third.
Tickets for the matches
Tickets for the tournament have already been selling first; Poland’s group games have already sold out. With handball being one of the most popular sports in Poland coupled with excellent value tickets (prices starting from 10 Euros for two games), it’s perhaps no surprise that demand was high. And should Poland qualify for the second phase then no doubt tickets for this will be snapped up within minutes as well for what will hopefully be a momentous occasion for Polish handball.
Polish handball venues
The venues for the matches are also impressive, not least the Tauron Arena in Krakow which is a new 15,000 seater arena. The other venues are equally as swish, such as the Spodek Arena in Katowice and the Ergo Arena in the coastal town of Sopot.
