Polish Volleyball – European Championships in Poland

October sees the start of the 2015 European Men’s Volleyball Championships in Bulgaria and Italy, with Polish volleyball fans having high hopes of their team bringing home the trophy. The Polish national team are of course world champions following their success on home soil in the World Championships in 2014.

The World Championships in 2014 were a huge success for Poland, both on and off the court. The opening match was played in Warsaw with the attendance hitting over 62,000 with Poland running out 3-0 winners against Serbia, before going on to win all of their remaining games in the first group stage whilst only losing one set in the process. Despite a slip up against USA, Poland won their other two games in the second group stage meaning they again advanced to the next stage where they overcame the powerful Brazilian and Russian sides. After defeating Germany in the semi-final they met Brazil again in the final, eventually winning 3-1 which earned them their first world championship for 40 years.

Poland will be hoping to they enjoy a better tournament than the last European Championships in 2013 when they finished in 9th place. They did of course win the competition in 2009 in Turkey. This time around they have been given a fairly easy group and will face Belgium, Belarus and Slovenia.
