Lechia Gdansk

Lechia Gdansk have been the nearly men of the Ekstraklasa in recent years, being there or thereabouts at the top of the table without really achieving anything. With a large fan base and big financial backing however, there is much hope that the club will go on to achieve great things in the next few years. Despite having a large budget for the 2014-15 season, a slow start saw them playing catch up. They made a few high profile signings during the winter break, most notably Polish international Sebastian Milla, however they still fell short, eventually finishing in 6th place which is something they will be looking to improve on this year.

The club was formed in 1945 and was somewhat of a powerhouse in Polish football in the early 50s, however this didn’t last long and the years that followed bore little success. The 80s were a memorable time though when the club won the Polish Cup for the first time. This qualified them for the European Cup Winners Cup where they were drawn with Italian giants Juventus in a game which they eventually lost 10-2 on aggregate. Some years in the wilderness followed, and it wasn’t until 2007-08 that things really started to look up for the club when they were promoted back to the Ekstraklasa, with the club starting to challenge at the right end of the table in the years that followed.

Lechia play their games at the PGE Arena which is the biggest stadium in the league and the third biggest in the country with a capacity of 43,000. The stadium was built as a venue for the 2012 European Football Championships where it hosted four matches. Like most other Polish clubs, the fans or Lechia are known for being passionate and loud, with their main rivals being Arka Gdynia who currently play in the second tier in Poland.
